How does Creatine work?
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is energy in its simplest form in muscles. It consists of one molecule of Adenosine and three molecules of phosphate, and it exists naturally in muscle tissue. When muscles contract against extreme resistance (weight training), a message is sent through the neurotransmitters instructing one phosphate molecule to break free from the other molecules. This causes a release of energy at a tiny cellular level "burst", which is what allows muscles to contract against resistance. This phenomenon happens millions of times during each contraction.
The creatine phosphate molecules will associate with the incomplete ATP (Adenosine + two phosphates) to create a complete ATP molecule again, thus allowing muscle contraction to continue for another 6 to 18 seconds. When all the ATP and Creatine Phosphate are used, there will be no more contractions (muscle failure) until the body recovers for a few minutes until the ATP is renewed.
